Are you enjoying our last-minute gift series? It’s been such fun featuring the creative work of some of my favorite bloggers! Today I am joined by one of the most wonderful women I know, Bev. Bev’s site, Flamingo Toes, is one of my go-to sites for inspiration. I love everything she does and am so grateful to have her here sharing her dishwasher safe hand decorated mug tutorial.
Hello Snap Readers! My name is Bev and I blog over at Flamingo Toes. I’m super excited to be here today!
I love making handmade gifts but I will confess that I am terrible out not planning ahead – so I’m usually rushing around at the last minute trying to make things. Totally the holiday atmosphere I am going for (or not.) I love gifts that don’t take a ton of time to make – and that is what I’m sharing with you today!
This Flowers and Polkadots Mug is sooo cute and easy to do – you can probably finish one up in a half hour. Boom. And it’s super easy to personalize – since it’s fabric you can choose anything your recipient will love! The best part is that it is Dishwasher safe! So magical right? I love it!
It is decorated with these gorgeous fabric flowers and little gold paint polkadots. I love the vintage feel it has! Also – this mug has gone through the dishwasher (on the top level) so I can completely vouch for it working!
You could add in a hot cocoa mix or maybe a Starbucks gift card and have a super easy gift all ready to go!
Dishwasher Safe Handmade Mug Tutorial
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
- Fabric pieces – enough to cut out the designs you want to put on the mug
- Gold paint pen
- Mug
- Dishwasher safe glossy Decoupage. I used the Martha Stewart brand
- Brush
- Helpful stuff – ruler and pencil
** This is important: The decoupage takes 28 days to cure. So while the mug only takes a short time to make, you cannot wash it for 28 days. So make sure to include a note with your gift about when they can begin using the mug! π **
Begin by cutting out your fabric designs. I used this pretty floral fabric.
Brush a layer of decoupage on the back of each of your fabric pieces. Place them on the mug.
I chose to put one fabric piece on each side of the mug.
Add a couple of rows of little gold polkadots. An easy way to do this is measure down on the mug where you’d like the row and make light pencil marks. Then dot the paint pen along the marks for some little polkadots. Let your mug dry.
Follow the instructions on the bottle to cover the design with decoupage. Do a coat over each of the fabric pieces, overlapping onto the mug just a bit. For the polkadots, I recommend using the end of a paint brush, dabbing it in the decoupage, then dot the decoupage over the paint dot. This will keep the mug looking as clean as possible when it all dries. The decoupage dries clear, but you will be able to see light brush strokes on the mug so you want to keep this as minimal as possible. Wait 24 hours and repeat the coverage, and again 24 hours later. Now all you have to do is wait 28 days to wash it. I think you could definitely gift it early though!
That’s all there is to it! And easy and unique gift that you can make for anyone!
I hope you like it!
I’d love for you to come visit Flamingo Toes sometime!
Thank you so much for sharing Bev. You’re phenomenal!

Love that mug idea! Thanks for the chance to win the gift card.
So many possibilities!
What a cute idea! I never would have thought of this and yet it is so simple… would work cute as gift, home decor, little tea parties, or even wedding centerpieces. AND depending on the fabric of choice it could go from vintage to modern to whatever fits your personality. I like it π
This is absolutely perfect!!!!! I’ve been trying to find a handmade mug for a swap partner and this is it!!!!!! Thank you for the tutorial.
What a great idea!
So cute!! It wold be great make a bunch present to giveaway all year π
That is so cute, I didn’t even know there was a dishwasher safe decoupage medium!
Another great tutorial from Bev! I love all of her great ideas and her jewelry tutorials are amazing, because she makes it all look so easy.
As I was reading this tutorial, it dawned on me how cute this would be to use the same fabric you used in making another gift for the same person, such as a lap quilt or an apron etc. If I still had a Grandma alive, I think I’d make her a cover for a heating pad and then use the same fabric to add to embellish a mug like this for her and then a box of teas since she was British and had tea every afternoon. BUT, now *I* am the Grandma and maybe I’ll make myself a cover for our heating pad and matching mug and drink tea in her honor while relaxing with my feet up having nothing else in the world to do at all daily. HA! Darn. Sorry, just got up so I must’ve dozed off a second. Nothing to do? WHAT is that? LOL
Great idea once again Bev. Thank you so much.
It’s beautiful, I know some ladies at work that would love this. Time to find some fabric! ????
This is so cool. I had no idea you could do this with fabric!!
This looks like such a fun thing to do.
Love this quick & beautiful ideal. Perfect for last minute present!
