We’re movie goers. We often take the kids to see the latest release on opening weekend. It’s our “thing.” I try not to think about the serious cash that we’re putting out to see these films, especially when upgrading to IMAX or 3D.
Fortunately we live near a theater that allows outside food within reason, so I defray our costs by creating little goodie bags and themed treat boxes to take to most movies…at least that’s how I justify this fun.
We recently saw the Minions movie and I made up some quick little Minion themed boxes for our theater candy (inspired by this post). They would really make for darling DIY Minion party favors though. The best part is they come together really quickly. I made a dozen Minions in about 30 minutes.
DIY Minion Party Favors
To complete this project you will need the following supplies:
- We R Memory Keepers Pillow Box Punch Board or Pillow Box Template
- Yellow, Blue, Black and Silver Cardstock
- Googly Eyes in Various Sizes
- Adhesive
- Foam Adhesive Tabs
- Scissors
The base of my little Minions is a paper pillow box. I punched Bazzill’s Textured Cardstock in Pollen with a We R Memory Keepers Pillow Box Punch Board to create my boxes. My pillow box Minions are 4 inches wide and about 7 inches tall.
If you don’t have the Pillow Box Punch Board, you might consider grabbing one. They’re relatively inexpensive and so easy to pull out for quick projects. You can also create your pillow box with your electronic cutting machine (I use a Cricut) or hand cut them using a template.
Tip. If you’re creating a project and would like a lot of texture, you can’t fail with Bazzill cardstock. It comes in the largest assortment of colors and textures HANDS DOWN. It’s perfect for projects with layers like this one. Having said that I find that if you’re using an electronic cutting machine, nothing cuts more smoothly than American Crafts cardstock.
Once the base of my Minion was created, it was time to embellish…
The goggle band is a strip of basic black cardstock, cut about 1/4 of an inch wide and eight inches long. I used simple adhesive to tack it down to the pillow box.
I added the silver “rim” of the goggles next (it’s Bazzill Bling Cardstock in Tiara and has a bit of a shimmer to it).
The final addition was the google eyes, which I added with foam sticky tabs to give the project a bit more dimension.
I created my Minion overalls. I think texture really makes a project, so I purchased Bazzill’s Swiss Dot Cardstock in Poolside. The overalls are basically a lopsided “H,” super-easy to create and cut on the Cricut or even hand cut with scissors.
I adhered the overalls to the front of my pillow box with adhesive. For projects like this I like to use the Scotch Adhesive Tape Gun. It lays down adhesive smoothly and adheres well.
Once I had all of the elements added to the pillow box, I folded it up and added adhesive to close it off. These Minions are the perfect size for candy and small treats.
My Minions got the full kid critique at the movies and we ended up adding mouths with sharpie markers later…Sometimes you can’t win!
