Make this placemat pillow in minutes for less than $10.
I have a pillow problem.
The first step toward recovery is admitting you have a problem, right?
I honestly didn’t realize what a problem I had until I was cleaning out the basement to make room for new shelves in the storage room and I had to set aside an entire corner of the room for my pillow collection. Yikes!
I’m not sure how well recovery is going…I actually made TWO NEW PILLOWS the other day. Of course when you see how easy it is to make a placemat pillow, you’re going to let this setback go. You’re going to let it go and you’re going to go out looking for perfect placemats to make a few pillows of your own!

Supplies:
Placemat
Polyester Fiberfill
Seam Ripper
Scissors
Needle (this is a great bulk buy!)
Thread (this one is the best for upholstery and pillow projects!)
Embellishments (I made pom poms. They’re so easy to create with this tool.)
There are about a billion ways you can make a pillow out of a placemat, but the VERY EASIEST is to start with a placemat that has a front and a back.
You can find these placemats just about anywhere, but my favorite place to purchase them is at Target. I purchased the two placemats used in today’s post for under $1 (clearance!!!), but you can always find them for less than $5. That’s a whole lot less than the $25+ you’ll purchase a regular pillow for elsewhere.
Use your seam ripper to open a hole about four to six inches wide – just wide enough to fit your hand in.
Fill your placemat with polyester fiberfill until full. Make sure to push fill all of the way into the corners of your placemat.
Once the pillow is stuffed, it’s time to add any embellishments and close it up.
I decided to add some quick pom poms to this pillow. I have a little pom pom maker, so they really came together quickly. I just hand stitched them to the corners prior to sewing the pillow shut.
I used my machine to sew a simple stitch on the edge of my pillow, but could just as easily have closed it up with a needle and thread.
It took less than 30 minutes to finish both pillows!
