Upcycled Dishtowel Apron

Hi SNAP readers!  It is Crystal here, from Stitched by Crystal, and I have a quick and easy upcycle project to share with you today!

Upcycled Dishtowel Apron for Kids

My kids love to help out in the kitchen, so I made this simple apron for them to wear while we bake!

It is the perfect size for little girls or boys and would be fun for helping out in the kitchen or would make a fun accessory for a play kitchen.

To make this apron, all you need is an old (or new) dishtowel and 1/8 yard of fabric.  You can even add some fun trims or embellishments if you wanted get creative!

So…Let’s make an apron!

Get your dish cloth and your 1/8 yard of fabric, you can use any type of fabric really, I choose some home décor fabric I had laying around.

Fold your dishtowel in half, lining up the shorter sides, and cut along the fold.  Cut your sash fabric so it is 5” wide, you will use the whole length of the fabric from selvage to selvage.  My fabric was 45” wide and is long enough to tie in a knot at the back, if your fabric is 60” wide, you would be able to tie a bow.

Gather the cut edge of your apron so it is about 10”.

Lay your sash on top of your cloth with right sides together.  Line up the middle of your sash and the middle of you cloth, pin the raw edges together and sew with a ½” seam allowance.

Flip your sash up, then fold the top of the sash in half, folding it down towards the front of the apron.

Pin the raw edges of the sash together on both sides of the apron.  Sew the edges of the sash sides with a ½” seam allowance, sewing as close to the apron on either side but leaving the middle of the sash open where the apron is attached.  Sew the ends of the sash at and angle.

Trim the seam allowance at the ends of the sash.

Turn the sash right side out through the hole you left open.  Press the sash.  Tuck the raw edge of the sash in at the back of the apron and pin in place.

Top stitch around the edge of the sash, closing the hole at the back when you topstitch.

Your apron is done and ready for baking!

For matching mommy and me aprons, use the whole dishtowel and double the length of the sash for an adult size.
