Hey there Snappy peeps! It’s Jessica from Mom 4 Real, back to share another fun painting project! Last month, I shared my Budget Bathroom Makeover , and this month I want to show you my Thrifted Microwave Cart Turned Kitchen Island! This is one of my favorite projects ever because we have a tiny kitchen and I never thought I would be able to have an island in there. Well friends, I am happy to report that I now have an island, and it cost less than $20! Booyah!
It all started with a trip to The Peddler’s Mall here in KY this past summer. I picked up a few things, hoping to give them new life, one being that hideous microwave cart that I scored for $10! It was originally going to be used as a TV cabinet for our patio since my husband loves to watch baseball while hanging outside. Well, as I was pushing it through the kitchen to get to the back patio, I stopped in the middle of the kitchen to answer my phone. I turned back around and realized it fit perfectly! So I held on to it until I had some time to give it a facelift.
I started by changing the top. I knew I wouldn’t be using it as a cutting board since someone else had owned it previously, so I decided to stain it.
I used some Minwax in Mahogany that I had left over from a previous project, and LOVE the way it turned out!
Next I broke out my absolute new favorite paint on the planet… Americana Decor Chalky Paint in Yesteryear. It’s the perfect shade of light grey and can be purchased online at The Home Depot. I am using it on my kitchen cabinets right now and can’t wait to show you!
It goes on like butter! Once it dried, I simply added a coat of clear wax to seal it!
Next up, new knobs…the silver ones just didn’t do it for me, and they didn’t match the knobs going on my kitchen cabinets now. I had to grab my trusty Ryobi drill to make the holes larger.
Perfection, right? I am in love with these glass knobs!
The new island fits perfectly into my kitchen, and I can simply move it out of the way if we have lots of guests over.
So, next time you see a crappy old microwave cart, don’t just pass it up…maybe give it new life!
I just love sharing thrifty budget friendly projects along with all natural cleaning tips at Mom 4 Real if you’d like to hop over and check em’ out…come on, I’ll be your best friend!

This is crazy! I bought the EXACT SAME cart at a moving sale for $5 on Friday! It was filthy, shaky, and had lots of spiders living inside. I just finished staining and painting an hour ago. I love it! Your’s looks totally amazing too. Cool ideas! Thanks!
kavida Jones says
how tall is it
Tauni says
Hi Kavida, You could use any height that is comfortable for you in, but in this case the cart was just shy of counter height.
Thanks,
Tauni
