DIY Summer Sign

Hi friends – Happy Summer!  The weather is warming up, and it’s time to start lightening up all your decor for Summer if you haven’t already.  Today I’m sharing this fun DIY Summer Sign.

DIY Summer SignI was inspired to make this sign after making some custom printables for a Summer giveaway that is currently happening here on SNAP & my site The Crafted Sparrow, plus 13 other amazing blogs.  I loved the cute little printables I made so much I wanted to incorporate a larger version of one of them in to my Summer decor.

Supplies:

–  Wood slatted sign from HERE (they are my favorite), they also come in vertical HERE
–  DecoArt Americana multi-surface paints (canary, shrimp, black tie)
–  Foam brushes
–  Vinyl stencil (the word HELLO is the font Bebas Neue, and sunshine is Learning Curve)

These are my favorite multi-surface paints, they come in some pretty amazing colors and cover so well.

DIY Summer SignI gave my entire slat board a light sanding to begin with, just to remove any loose or splintering wood.  Then I painted the entire board the canary/yellow.  It should only take two light coats to cover your entire board.

DIY Summer SignI cut a couple of vinyl stencils with my Cricut Explore machine.  This is optional, if you don’t have a machine you can freehand paint your design or even use a cardstock printed template that you can cut by hand.  Lot’s of options.  I created two stencils, one with the word HELLO and a second with the word sunshine.  They will be painted in two steps.

Apply your HELLO stencil first and paint with your shrimp/coral paint.  I actually added a tiny bit of the canary/yellow to my coral paint to give it a little more of an orange tinge.  Carefully use your foam brush to dab paint on over the stencil to avoid it leaking under the vinyl.

Once the word HELLO is dry you can apply your second stencil for the word sunshine.  I slightly overlapped the two words on my sign.  Then paint it carefully with your black paint.

Tip:  on both vinyl stencil steps you want to remove the stencils before the paint completely dries, if you don’t you will risk peeling paint off.

DIY Summer Sign

Once everything is dry you have a fun and quick sign that is the perfect addition to your Summer decor.  It’s so bright and cheerful I love it!

Hi – I am wondering how you create your stencil with the cricut? Do you have a tutorial on that somewhere?

What size of slat did you use for the one shown? The small or large slat (12×8 or 18×11)? Thanks for your help!

Hi Sara, this sign is made from the large size, but you can choose whatever fits your space best! xo Tauni
