Budget Bathroom Makeover – Including Framing Out Your Builder Grade Mirror

Bathroom Makeover

Hey, hey SNAP! peeps!  I’m Jessica from Mom 4 Real, and I am so excited to be back here sharing another fun project with you!  Today I’m going to share my budget bathroom makeover with you. It’s kind of an odd subject, I know, but we all have bathrooms and there is no reason they should be ugly, right?

Budget Bathroom Makeover Before

Example:  This is my bathroom before.  Ugh….not even sure what to say about this.  It’s just bad.  I tried to give this once purple bathroom a makeover last year with some paint that I already had, and lets just say, FAIL.  I spent an entire day painting it and adding the white stripe, and honestly, it could have been really cute, but that green just didn’t do it for me, and I was too exhausted to start over.  So even if you don’t have the budget to makeover your entire bathroom, start with paint…it makes a huge difference…

Budget Bathroom Makeover

Since this is the bathroom that I get ready in every morning, it really should be calming and peaceful…not jarring and ick.  I mean, who wants to start their day looking at something that makes their stomach turn?  So, I started by finding a paint color that I love…beachy aqua goodness.  I really lucked out because they had this color in the oops paint area at Home Depot.

I also painted the vanity.  I had resigned myself to the fact that I was just going to be stuck with the ugly vanity that I had, then one day, I thought I would paint it.  I used American Decor Chalky Finish Paint and sealer, and I couldn’t be happier!  It hasn’t scratched at all, and I am in love with the dark grey!

*Sidenote*  Home Depot and Lowe’s both have a section right behind the paint counter where they put discounted paints.  There is nothing wrong with these paints, they simply are an oops…customers come in and pick a color, the employees mix it, then the customer decides it isn’t the exact one they want, so they discount them.  The one I chose would normally be $36, but I snagged it for $5 for a gallon…whoop!

Change out your faucet

Next I added a new faucet.  We had the contractor grade faucet…you know, the plastic one that moves all around and controls both the hot and cold water.  Nothing wrong with these at all, but mine was gross!  It was discolored and had stains inside. You can purchase a new faucet like the one I have for anywhere from $30 – $250.  They are super easy to install, so don’t be afraid of this.  I literally unscrewed a few screws, loosened some bolts, slid this baby in from the top and reattached the connectors and BAM!  Totally beautiful!

Frame out your bathroom mirror

I also framed out the builder grade mirrors.  I actually did this step when I painted the bathroom that hideous shade of green, but you can find the tutorial —> HERE!  No tools required.  I simply had the guys at HD cut the trim for me, added the squares at the end and used liquid nails to adhere them to the mirror.

Add a fun picture or sign

For the finishing touch, I added a fun piece of subway art and a bird’s nest fern. I absolutely love live plants and the sweet sigt makes me smile every morning…now who wouldn’t want to start their mornings smiling?

Budget Bathroom Makeover

From top to bottom this makeover cost around $100…for the entire room!

So, what do you think?  Do you like the before or after?

Nice! I need to frame out our bathroom mirror and paint in a different shade of blue – I used a semi-gloss and it seems like it reflects the light in bad ways!

Deanna, I can totally see why the gloss might not be your fav. I hope you’ll share photos when you’re done! xoxo Tauni
