Leather Monogram Luggage Tag

Hello again! It is Crystal, from Stitched by Crystal, here with a quick tutorial just in time for father’s day!  Do you have a dad who loves to travel? Or maybe one who travels a lot for work?  These DIY monogram luggage tags would make a fun fathers day gift!

DIY Leather Luggage Tag - perfect for Father's Day

These tags are made from leather (or faux leather) and have an initial monogram that is sewn with a regular sewing machine.  They come together in just a few easy steps!

Want to make a luggage tag?  Here’s what you need:

  • A small piece of leather or faux leather.  Some craft stores sell leather remnants in small packages, they are cheap too!
  • A sewing machine with a leather needle and thread to match your leather as well as contrasting thread for the monogram.
  • Sewing clips or clothes pins, you can’t use pins on leather, it will leave holes.
  • Leather punch tool.
  • Scissor or rotary cutter.

  1. Cut two 2.5 inch x 3.5 inch rectangles from your leather.
  2. Cut a small rectangle in the middle of one rectangle.
  3. Embroider your letter on the other rectangle.  I freehanded mine, but you could draw your letter on first with a washable marker (test it first on a scrap of leather to make sure it comes off).  Sew back and forth over the letter 5 or six times until you get a look you like.  Then with a needle, stitch the thread tails from the front to the back of the leather and tie them off.  Have small children? Let them draw dad’s initial on the leather and then embroider it for them!
  4. Place your two rectangles wrong sides together and clip around the edges to keep them in place.
  5. Sew down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side, leaving the top open.
  6. With your leather punch, poke a hole in the top of the tag.
  7. Print your contact info on a piece of paper that is about 1 ¾” x 2 ¾” and stick it in your tag through the opening at the top.
  8. Cut a skinny strip of leather that is about ¼” wide and 16” long and loop it through the hole.

Loop the luggage around the handle of your suitcase and you are ready to hit the road!

Thanks for the tutorial! I had some faux leather leftovers lying around, so this was perfect for a quick afternoon sewing session. I added a sheet of clear plastic between the layers to protect address label from water
