DIY Manicure Kit for Mom

Mother’s day is right around the corner!  Do you have a gift for mom yet?  I am Crystal, from Stitched by Crystal, and I have a quick DIY gift to pamper mom this mother’s day!

This little oilcloth case sews up in just minutes and then it can be filled with some nail polish and other manicure goodies.  If mom is not into nail polish, she can use this case for lotions, soaps, make up…pretty much anything.

As a mom of 2 toddlers, some nail polish and 15 minutes to paint my own nails sounds like heaven!  But I think this is a gift that any mom would love to receive.

Want to make a manicure kit?  Great let’s get started!

You will need:

• 1/3 yard of oil cloth.
• One 9” zipper
• Sewing clips (clothespins or binder clips will work too.
• Sewing machine and coordination thread.

Start by cutting your oilcloth into a rectangle that is 9” x 13”

I sewed the zipper on top of my case because I like the look of the contrasting exposed zip.  To do this, center the zipper along one of the 9” sides of your rectangle.  Line the edge of the oil cloth up about 1/4” from the zipper teeth along the back of the zipper and use your clips to hold it in place.  Top stitch the zipper in place.

Zip your zipper and clip the other side of the zipper to the other 9” side of the oil cloth, making sure the sides of your case are lined up.  Then open your zipper and clip the zipper in place.

Top stitch the other side of the zipper in place.

Trim off the extra at the ends of the zipper.  Close your zipper about half way, and then turn your case inside out.  Fold your case so the zipper is about 1.5” from the top.  Clip along both sides then sew both sides with a ½” seam allowance.

To create gussets in the bottom corners, flatten the corner so the side seam lines up with the bottom fold.  Draw a line across the corner 1” from the corner.  Sew along the line then trim the extra.  Repeat with the other corner.

Turn your case right side out through the zipper.

Add a small ribbon zipper pull and you are done!

Now fill it up with some goodies for mom!
