How to Shoot the Perfect Snow Photo

Last weekend Jen and I were able to participate in a photo shoot with one of my closest friends, Emilie. We laughed and giggled and ended up with dozens of awesome photos.

I have to tell you that lining up next to Jen for photos is pretty darn intimidating. She’s tall, thin, stylish – gorgeous!

I truly believe that one of the MOST IMPORTANT qualities of a great photographer is the ability to make their subject feel comfortable. It’s one of Emilie’s strengths for sure. Well, that and teaching…

Whilst messing around at Jen’s cottage, we took some fun photos in the snow. They turned out pretty awesome and today, Emilie is going to teach YOU (complete with awesome outtakes) how to recreate the feature effect!

How to Shoot the Perfect Snow Photo

If it’s going to snow, let’s celebrate it!  This photo will captivate old and young alike!  It’s easy to create, I’ll teach you how below.

Shhh…Here’s a large part of the secret…The sparkly snow is not actually sparkly snow.  Snow really doesn’t blow very well.  This “snow” is a combination of glitter and star confetti.

You could also use snowflake confetti.  I couldn’t find any iridescent snowflakes so I used stars.

The next step to this image is the lighting. Put your subject in the same light as your background.  Don’t put your subject in the shade if the snowy background is sunny.  You want both your subject and your background to be lit the same.

Use a low f-stop. I love the look of a 2.8f or lower. As you can see in the photo below a lower f-stop allows you to get a small amount in focus and the rest out of focus.
The magic of the blowing snow photo is the fact that some of the glitter is out of focus. It gives the appearance of sparkling. I actually used an f-stop of 1.8f for a little extra sparkle.

I used the select focus function on my camera to focus on the end of Tauni’s fingertips. That way her face has a soft focus and all the sparkly snow flying is out of focus. CLICK HERE to learn a little more about Select Focus.

Have fun and take lots of photos this winter.  Enjoy these outtakes…
