Cancer Can Suck It

I am a bit behind on email right now…Well, let’s be honest, I am a bit behind on a whole lot of everything right now. I know that you’ve noticed because you’ve emailed, you’ve texted, you’ve even tweeted.

I blame WebMD.

Web md jpg

Okay. Not really. I am just using it as a scapegoat. Whenever I am confronted with the unfamiliar I turn to research and this is one of the sites that have consumed my time online lately.

Over the two years, I’ve been challenged by some health related issues. Unfortunately, the issues have continued to get worse and this summer they sort of hit something of a debilitating high.

435c6fb201db11e291d6123138072de5 7

In September (actually the same day SNAP! tickets went on sale), I had surgery to remove a large growth from inside my uterus.

We thought the procedure would not only “cure” the many symptoms I’d been experiencing, but we also believed it would resolve my infertility issues. All I have ever wanted to be is a mom, so this was super-exciting news.

Unfortunately after the surgery my health sort of spiralled down and I ended up feeling worse. In the last two months, I’ve spent time at the InstaCare facility, the hospital and a variety of doctor’s offices.

My symptoms read like a laundry list of what to expect in the third trimester of pregnancy, with a few extra nasty add ons, so I’ve actually spent a fair amount of Google time being directed here…

What to expect jpg

In fact, I had one doctor insist that I was nearly nine months along and try to convince me I just didn’t realize it. We had a lovely conversation about the birds and the bees. Yes friends, he sincerely believed I was that dumb.

After forcing me to take a pregnancy test (that obviously came back negative), the doctor ordered a CT scan. By this point I had little faith in the doctor and honestly called to cancel the appointment the morning of, but the scheduler talked me in to keeping it, “just in case.”

Ctscan jpg

The next day both the doctor who ordered the scan told me there were issues with my reproductive system (DUH!) and told me to go back to my OB/GYN.

I went into my appointment the day before Thanksgiving expecting to essentially be told that I’d have to learn to live with it.

I did not go in expecting to hear the word cancer.

AT ALL.

Tumors on my reproductive organs are growing at an alarming rate. Since late-September they have more than doubled in size and spread. As a result, my uterus has grown to the size of a 36-38 week pregnancy (hence the ridiculous pregnancy symptoms).

I am sick and uncomfortable and I am hoping I am lucky.

My doctor believes that he will be able to remove all of the affected organs with a total hysterectomy. I go in tomorrow for the surgery early, early in the morning.

Since I am not eligible for laparoscopic surgery like would usually be performed, I will be in the hospital for a bit. Once home, I will be in bed through the end of the month (which really puts a cramp on Christmas, but means I might get to all of your email!). I am hoping to be up and around in January, although the recovery time is six to eight weeks.

Posterimage via Tricia O Design

My doctor is pretty confident that this surgery will put an end to my issues once and for all and so I am feeling pretty positive…I will find out if I need further treatment in a couple of weeks after they check my lymph nodes.

I debated about posting this, but here’s the thing…I’ve just spent a week and a half reading every symptom, every story, every recovery, on every site online and they made a difference. I even re-read all of Ashley’s posts. They all helped put things into perspective.

My story isn’t particularly touching, nor is it terribly amazing. What matters is that I am contributing. I am contributing my story to the bank of thousands of others that have been published by women. Women who are changing the world by recording their lives on blogs.

Thank you. Thank you bloggers for sharing. Thank you readers for reading and giving bloggers a voice. You’ve made a difference in my life.

Before I wrap this up, I do want to let you know that while I may be a little more quiet, plans for SNAP! continue to roll forward wonderfully. I have a fantastic team and things will continue as planned.

I am so sorry that you have to go through this! I am having a similar issue, and may also have to get a hysterectomy to remove my tumors and such (though I am only “14 weeks”, lol).

Anyway, I really hope that everything goes well and that when all is said and done you feel better. Be kind to yourself and be sure to let people spoil you rotten during your recovery.

I am truly sorry for all that you are facing. My husband and I were infertility patients for 6 years before we had our first daughter and I know the heartache and pain it can cause. My daughter is now 21 and your story reads like a page out of her life. She too is facing surgery on December 18th to remove a tumor that is attached to her uterus and pancreas. She has Poly Cystic Ovaries as well and they will be removing her right ovary.
I will pray for God’s peace and healing for you and I will keep your physicians in my prayers. My God bless you and your husband. I will pray daily for you and for you to have peace of mind after the surgery.

I am so sorry to hear your news! What a terrible thing to go through! But know you are not alone. I am a 2 year breast cancer survivor with 5 surgeries in less then one year. I do plan to write about my experience on my blog at some point but have not been able to get the words together just yet.
Hearing the words “you have cancer” are scary I know! It has been a long and winding road and continues to be. But I have excepted that as my life as it is now. It is forever life changing for sure. But when you emerge from the other side of all of this you will see things in a totally new light. Surely not what we would choose for our lives, cancer, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel in one form or another!
And an awakening and better awareness to the really important things in life. Which I am sure you are already experiencing!
I will pray for you that your surgeons will be able to remove it all and with ease. I will pray that your lymph nodes are clear. And I will also pray for a speedy and pain free recovery!!
    God Bless!
    xoxo

I’m so sorry you have to go through this Tauni. I went through a similar thing last year and it was because I had big fibroid tumors growing in my uterus and was having all kinds of issues. I had a full hysterectomy last Spring because of them along with other problems I was having. So many people didn’t understand why I would have a hysterectomy at “my age” because surely I would want more kids, etc., etc. But until people are in your shoes, they can’t understand. Tauni, Thank you for sharing your story – it’s given me strength. Sometimes, we women get in ruts thinking life just isn’t treating us fairly. “Pity parties”… my mom likes to call them… then she reminds me that they’re not fun parties “because no body likes to come!” I’ve been having one of those for no good reason. Your post snapped (seriously no pun intended) me out of it! Thank you for being proactive. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I pray that this surgery goes quick and easy and you are finally able to start feeling better and yourself again soon. Wow. You have been through a lot. You are a strong woman and many, many people are praying for you. I beat a very rare form of cervical cancer in 2005 with a series of surgeries, and will pray for the same results for you. Good luck!!!

Thank you for sharing your very personal story with us! I think a very important lesson to take from your story is to be an advocate for your own health…pushing for answers, and not accepting “answers” that aren’t right. While not cancer, I spent 5 years with major gynecological issues with multiple doctors telling me “there was nothing wrong with me”. I FINALLY found a doctor who was committed to figuring it out and I really felt like we partnered together for my health.

Sending you positive thoughts and prayers for a smooth and perfect surgery, and a speedy and restful recovery!
