Easter Dress {tutorial}

*Tutorial by Heidi @ Green Doodle for her win of the Spring challenge of season 15*

First off, thank you to Missy for hosting SYTYC and giving me the chance to test my creative limits. Next, thank you for supporting the Twirly Girl Easter Frocks.  These dresses were very rewarding to make, and with a few pattern modifications you can make a dress (or two) as well.

The dress was made from McCalls 5033 with a few changes.  I raised the arm and neckline, added pintucks for visual interest and omitted the zipper – using bridal button looping instead.
The jackets were from Simplicity 1723 with a shortened sleeve and an added peter pan collar. As I have learned most of these techniques on the web, I’d rather share a technique I experimented with on my own.

1.Tell us a little about you and your blog.

I started my blog to be able to share with my family and friends the fun things that I had been creating. More specifically I had become quite infatuated with creating fun and interesting cakes for my friends and family for holidays. I remember sitting on the couch one day watching a cake show on food network and thought to myself….”I can do that!”. I looked up a few things on the internet and I was on my way.

2.How and when did you start crafting?

Before we get to the current challenge, the Knock-Off round (which you readers voted as your favorite theme in that survey a month or so ago) let’s go over the results from last week.

But that also makes it Chrissy’s turn to say goodbye.  The first week is always the worst week to have to do this! Thanks for all you’ve done for the contest Chrissy!  Those Hand Seedings are really cool and unique.

And now for this weeks challenge. Thank you for all your imput about the polls that you have given me.  I’m trying to come up with a better way of doing it that will fix all the problems we’ve been having and make the most of you happy.  Until I figure that out, thank you for being patient 🙂  The poll will be open until 7am ET on Friday morning so get your vote in and make sure you spread the word so your friends can come play too!

Voting is still open! {and thank you!!}

Hey guys!  Just wanted to drop in with two quick things.

First, the voting is still open!  Because of the problems we had with the poll (which turned out to be my fault due to some typo’s in the coding :\ ) I’ve decided to extend voting until tomorrow night.  And the results will be announced on Monday along with the new challenge.

So go vote!

And second,  Thank you so much for all the kind things you’ve emailed to me since my announcement on Wednesday.  I re-read the post yesterday and realized it was a pretty downer post.  Don’t worry!  I’m happy and I’m hopeful, I really am.  I was just trying to be realistic with you all about my thoughts on leaving.

And it’s not like I’ll be leaving the online world for ever – I’ve made too many friends and have too much fun here.  I will still have the 3 hours a day Abi is at preschool, and the nights that my husband works late to do my crafting (there’s no way I’d be able to just give that up).  So I’m still going to have my shop (that I’m still working on stocking with the stuff I already have made) and my other blog.

What’s great about them is that there isn’t always a deadline looming over my head during family time. There’s not a tight schedule that people are waiting on like there is here on SYTYC.  If I decide that I would rather go to the park than post the new cinnamon bread recipe I made, then I will go to the park and I won’t even spare a thought about that bread 🙂  It will allow me to focus on me and my family and I’m so excited!

A Happy/Sad Announcement about the future of SYTYC

I have been thinking about writing this post for a few months, since I returned home after our failed adoption placement to be exact.  Then a few days ago I got some devastating news that made me start thinking harder.

But the last straw was yesterday afternoon when I was struggling to get our internet back up and running (I’m actually writing this from the library because the connection is still down).  My little Abi came up behind me and in a very quiet voice said, “Mommy, please don’t do anymore work today. I really want to cuddle with you.”  So I dropped everything and cuddled my sweet girl.

photo

It made me realize that although I feel I keep a pretty good work/life balance, Abi may see it differently.  She will only be 4, then 5, then 6 once.  And I may only be able to experience those ages with this one child, I may not get the chance to raise more.

As much as I have enjoyed running this blog and being inspired by all of you for the last 3 and a half years, there is one thing for sure.

If you were to ask the 5 year old me, the 15 year old me, or even the present day me what I wanted to be when I grow up my answer wouldn’t be blogger.

It would be mom.

But I can’t just let So You Think You’re Crafty die.  It is what helped me out of my depression after my first miscarriage.  It has been what I spent my quiet hours alone doing.  It’s helped finance my fabric addiction and help out with bills when money was a little tight.  And I think it’s a great, fun way to both be inspired and share inspiration.

So I’ve decided to sell the blog.

Don’t worry, everything will continue on as normal until I find someone that I think will take care of the contest, and probably even improve on it (because there sure is room for improvement :) ).

If you would like to send me an offer or get more information just send an email and I’ll get everything to you.
