Hey my friends! It is McKenzie from Girl Loves Glam here and I am excited to share with you one of my favorite DIY hair secrets! I love using hair masks to help my hair get the extra nutrients it needs. There is nothing quite like the feeling of soft, healthy hair! I think it makes you feel like a totally new person. Although I am a beauty blogger and a cosmetologist, I rarely have time to get my hair done. My hair gets really dry and I get horribly ugly split ends that I cut off by myself, but it gets to the point when I just need something extra to give it the goodness I need. That is when I pull out the big guns… The hair mask! The best part about using a hair mask? You can make it yourself too! You probably already have all of the ingredients you need at home too!
The thing I love about making my own hair mask, is I know exactly what I am putting in my hair. I don’t have to worry about what random chemicals I am putting in there. This hair mask only has four ingredients in it.
These ingredients weren’t just chosen at random. Each of these four ingredients have a purpose.
Coconut Oil- This is a fabulous natural conditioner. Your hands will even feel silky smooth after you put the hair mask in your hair!
Extra Virgin Olive Oil- This is a great natural conditioner too. It is also awesome for dry, damaged hair.
Honey- This adds the moisture that our hair desperately needs. It will also help add a gorgeous glow to your hair.
Baking Soda- Did you know that shampoo doesn’t get all of the hair products off your scalp and hair? Baking soda will help get the rest of that product off of there!
Now it is time to make our hair mask!
- 1 cup coconut oil
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 Tbsp honey
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- Put all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix together with a hand mixer, or put them in a blender and blend them all together until they are mixed into a cream.
I use a hair mask about once or twice a week. Just so you are aware, this hair mask WILL make your hair look greasy! But it is only for the first day after you put it in your hair. I recommend washing your hair at night once a week, putting the hair mask on in the shower, letting it sit on your hair while you wash your body, then rinsing it out. In the morning you can wash your hair again like usual. This will cut down the greasy look a lot. The grease you will see is actually just the coconut oil that is sitting on your hair. It is good to have the oils sit on your hair so they can really soak in, so if you have a day that you know you will just be hanging out at your house then use it on that day so that your hair will look greasy all day and night instead of just at night while those oils really soak in.
This recipe will make enough for me to use about two or three times. For the jar that is pictured, I had to triple the recipe. This is a great gift to give your friends who seem to have everything. I recommend doubling or tripling the recipe (maybe even more if they have more girls in the house too) and putting it in a jar with this cute little printable that I made for it. They will love it! Just make sure to tell them how to use it so they don’t secretly hate you for making them look like they have greasy hair when they decide to use a hair mask on the morning of their wedding day or something.
To print off your own printable tag, just go to this link HERE.
Save the image and print it off. I just punched a hole in the top and tied it onto the jar with some twine.
This hair mask is also great to give as a gift with this face mask too!
I am sharing the recipe and the printable for the all natural face mask on my blog today. You can find that post HERE.
