DIY BEACH WAVES HAIR SPRAY

Meet John Frieda Ocean Waves spray – one of THE best hair products I have ever used…the texture, the hold, the smell…Sigh.

Though it started out as a summer fling, my love affair with this product continued for a good two years, until one day? Bam. Gone.

Has this ever happened to you?!

Five years later, I am still dreaming of Ocean Waves. I have tried dozens of “like” products. The closest is probably Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, but it’s a bit too expensive for my taste. I haven’t yet tried Aquage Sea Salt Texturizing Spray, but I’ve heard it works well.

I’ve been trying a DIY beach waves hair spray that works well for me, so I thought I would share it.

DIY BEACH WAVES HAIR SPRAY

Sea Salt Spray Recipe

  • Spray bottle (be sure to select a plastic that will hold up in the microwave)
  • 1 T Coconut Oil – I used Nature’s Way brand, which is available online or at most organic stores.
  • 2 T Sea Salt – If you don’t already have this on hand, you can find it in most grocery stores
  • 1 T Conditioner – I just used my daily conditioner Matrix Biolage Smoothing Conditioner
  • 1 T Hair Gel – I used Garnier Fructis Curl Scrunch Gel
  • 2 C HOT Water
Combine all ingredients and pour into your spray bottle. Ta da. Beach waves hair spray.

DIY BEACH WAVES HAIR SPRAY RESULTS

Rather than show you photos right after I fixed my hair, I thought I would show you my hair after one full day of wear…(Pardon the less than fabulous photos. I’ve not yet figured out how to take great photos of myself in the bathroom mirror.)

Sea Spray

This is after a full Saturday of comings and goings, along with a bit of time in the wind at a night event.

And then on day two…

Sea Salt Spray

I’ve been using this product in my hair for about two weeks now and I really like it. I have found that my hair feels softer and more natural after using it and I really like the curl I am able to pull off simply.

After washing my hair like I normally do, I spray the mixture liberally over my whole head. Once I’ve applied the beach waves spray, I simply twist my hair into sections, scrunch and then air dry. Once it’s all dry, I do have to go back and smooth out my bangs and shake out the curls.

On day two, I simply sprayed a bit of the beach waves hair spray into the palm of my hand and went through smoothing and retwisting my hair. I also used a bit of hairspray on some of the frizzies.

A LITTLE BIT MORE…

Full disclosure. My hair is quite thick. It’s also corse and has quite a bit of natural curl. If your hair is fine or perhaps it’s very straight, you will probably want to adjust the recipe slightly.

  • For more hold, add additional salt (but understand that more salt can dry your hair out).
  • If your hair is very fine or a bit oily, you can cut down or omit the coconut oil.
  • If you don’t have much curl in your hair, it’s probably going to be more like waves than curls.
The coconut oil is a solid and will harden up at temperatures under 78 degrees. I usually take my bottle into the shower with me, where it melts in the hot water. You can also microwave it if you need to.

I am really happy with the recipe, but I am considering an alternative to the coconut oil – Dabur Vatika Coconut Hair Oil. I have heard wonders about it and I’ve ordered a bottle to try.

Have you tried anything like this? I’d love to know how it worked for you!
