Rolled Fabric Snowman

Editor’s Note: I am thrilled to be joined today by Mandy, from Sugar Bee Crafts, who will be a regular contributor to Snap in 2014. I met Mandy at our first Snap Conference. She’s been a great supporter through the years and frequently shares projects in our weekly Show & Tell party.

Hi Everyone! I’m Mandy and I blog at the super-awesome www.SugarBeeCrafts.com – you should check it out!  I am super excited to be part of the SNAP contributor team, and super excited to share with you a simple craft for Last Minute Christmas Decor – – a rolled fabric snowman!

This comes together so quickly and it looks so cute – my kind of craft!  I am weak for all things snowmen, so I love this even more than normal.

What you’ll need:

–white fabric, ripped into 1 inch wide strips (I ripped up an old sheet)

–hot glue

–3 coordinating buttons

–small scrap of flannel

–scrap of felt

First, tie a knot in the end of a strip of fabric:

Then twist and roll the fabric, while wrapping it around flatly, as shown below:

If you’re a visual learner, you may want to check out the short video I made a few years ago illustrating this step:  How to Make a Rolled Fabric Flower.
Then when it gets to be the size you want it, cut the strip and secure the tail end on the back using hot glue:

Now, since nothing is holding it together except for twists and wraps, we need to attach a back to stabilize it. Generously apply hot glue to the back of the roll:

Then firmly press it on your sheet of felt. Repeat the above steps to make 2 more rolls, each slightly smaller than the roll before it. Press them to the felt in a snowman stack like shown:

You’ll notice that they aren’t as stiff as you’d like when you pick up the felt – to solve this, bend the rolls away from each other and add some hot glue in the crack to adhere the rolls directly to one another:

Now cut away the excess felt:

Attach a loop to the back if you would like to use your snowman as an ornament.  Glue buttons and scarf into place.  That’s it!  Here’s what it will look like from the back:

When I started the project, I was thinking ornament.  But then I thought it’d be cute just to frame him and use him as some holiday decor.  I think it’d be super cute to make a whole snowman family – I still might do that!
