It’s a holiday here in Utah and we’ve got some fun plans this evening that include a little entertaining and some fireworks. One of the recipes I will be using tonight I discovered on the site of today’s featured crafter!
Beth has shared some amazing projects with us this season. I loved her painted chain bracelets and the boys are still bugging me to make them cool t-shirts.
Interview with Beth, Remarkably Domestic
1. Tell us a little about you and your blog.
My blog has evolved over the few years I’ve been writing. I focus a lot more on crafting now than I used to. When I started, I was putting up recipes and gardening tips and kids projects, and while I still do those occasionally, I do much, much more crafting now. Writing and photographing tutorials is a strength for me, so I do a lot of that. I really enjoy learning new things, so I’m always gearing up to start a new craft like batik or tatting or something else obscure. Within the last year I’ve learned a lot about graphic design and coding, so I’ve been redesigning my own site. I don’t like to stick with one thing for very long.
2. How and when did you start crafting?
I didn’t realize it until recently, but I’ve really been crafting all my life. My mom was a big crafter when I was little; she made a lot of our clothes and was always working on a craft, or baking, or doing something productive. I didn’t start seriously crafting on a regular basis until I had kids, though, when I had more time at home and no outside deadlines.
3. How often do you craft?
I’m definitely working on something all the time; I always have a project in the works. I actively work on them, though, about 3 times a week.
4. Where do you get your inspiration?
Of course, like all good crafters, I’m addicted to Pinterest. I’m also inspired by things I see in stores. I’ll often think “I can make that!” or “Hey, that would be cute as a necklace!” I’m trying more and more to be inspired by materials instead of finished products, though.
5. What is your favorite medium to work in?
Oh dear. I’m a bit promiscuous when it comes to crafting. I always want to learn a new skill. I like to crochet, and I enjoy working with jewelry. I’ve been doing a lot of knotting lately and I enjoy that, too. I really want to get better at hand lettering and calligraphy.
6. What is your guilty pleasure?
Watching terribly stressful shows on TV like I Survived, The Walking Dead, or American Horror Story. I’m kind of a horror junkie, which surprises many people since I think I seem generally peppy and not morose. I also love reading YA novels, but only the post-apocalyptic ones. Again with the tragic content!
7. What makes you smile?
My kids crack me up all the time; they have great senses of humor. My dog and cats are characters, too, and my husband is a comedy writer so he’s always got me laughing.
8. What is your favorite thing to do (other than crafting)?
I love to sit in my garden and read a really good book. Or go to a challenging yoga class. Or wait, eat cake. Definitely eat cake.
I am disappointed you will not get a chance to vote on Beth’s summer challenge project. Her patio cocktail set are adorable!
I mentioned that Beth’s a great entertainer. You’ve got to check out some of the great recipes on her site…
