Looking for an inexpensive way to update a room? Consider creating a 10 minute placemat pillow. This post may contain affiliate links.
The new guest room is a true mix of purchased pieces and DIY projects. Creating a few items on my own, like the artwork and the throw pillows helped to keep the room on budget.
Each of the beds is topped with a store-bought standard pillow, Euro-sized pillow and a fun fur pillow that was used at last year’s Snap Conference. The tassel throw pillows and little map pillows were both DIY projects made from KITCHEN LINENS.
Yup. You read that right. I made my pillows out of placemats and tea towels.
Today I am going to share a quick tutorial on how to make the 10-minute placemat pillows I made for the new guest room.
10 Minute Placemat Pillow
To recreate this project you will need:
One or Two Double Sided Placemats (I like to look for inexpensive placemats at Target and Home Goods)
Heat Transfer Vinyl (I use HTV from Expressions Vinyl)
Iron (I use this one)
Seam Ripper
Polyester Batting
Thread
Sewing Machine or Needle
I snagged these tassel placemats at Target. I’d been eying them for a while, I mean come on…they have tassels! They were on sale for a steal of a deal at under $3 each.
When you’re looking for a placemat to turn into a pillow, search for something double sided. You should be able to pull the two sides apart if you want to make a quick, simple pillow
Turning a placemat into a pillow can be done in three simple steps…
- Using a seam ripper or small pair of scissors, open up the placemat
- Fill the open space with polyester batting
- Close up the opening
Not only do these tassel placemats mirror the rest of the bedding in the room, the darker linen color adds a bit of texture to an otherwise white space.
[To really tie it all together (and because we’ve established that I like words on everything) I added the words explore and wander to the placemats using Scissor Easy Weed HTV from Expressions Vinyl before deconstructing them.]
